Dr. Manuel A. Garcia wanted to be a doctor for as long as he could remember, recalling that medicine had always been a part of his life. He would often accompany his father, who was in orthopedics, on his medical rounds.

“The dedication I saw in my father further heightened my desire to become a doctor and helped me truly understand the significance of the medical profession,” Dr. Garcia said.

He received his medical degree in 1993 from The Higher Institute of Medical Sciences in Cuba. Upon arriving in the United States in 1996, he studied English at Miami Dade Community College and also began the arduous task of revalidating his medical degree. During this time, he also worked as a mental health counselor, which cemented his love for psychiatry and propelled him to specialize in it.

“I feel psychiatry truly challenges me,” he said.

Following meeting his wife and starting a family, he moved with them to New York City to begin his residency in Psychiatry at Metropolitan Hospital in 2006. After finishing his second year, he transferred back to Miami to complete his residency in psychiatry at Jackson Memorial Hospital in 2010.

Upon graduating, he worked at various community centers and outpatient centers as well as Jackson Memorial Hospital, until he came to CHI in August of 2011. In January 2013, Dr. Garcia became board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Garcia feels that he is very fortunate to have been able to pursue his dream as a psychiatrist.

“My goal is to be able to provide patients with my services, the knowledge that I have acquired, and the utmost quality of care and to maintain my faithfulness to the Hippocratic Oath,” he said.
